We are seeking a highly qualified Dermatology Pathology Assistant (PA) to join our independent high-complexity CLIA-licensed laboratory. The Pathology Assistant will perform gross examination and dissection of dermatology specimens collected from our California-based clinics. The ideal candidate will hold certification from a recognized organization and meet both CLIA and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) regulatory requirements.
**Must be ASCP Certified**
This position works under the general supervision of a board-certified pathologist, with responsibilities for maintaining high standards of laboratory safety, accuracy, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Gross Dissection and Examination:
- Perform the gross description and dissection of dermatological tissue specimens.
- Accurately describe, measure, and document findings from tissue samples.
- Prepare specimens for microscopic diagnosis following established laboratory protocols.
- Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Adhere to all CLIA and California Department of Public Health (CDPH) regulations regarding high-complexity laboratory procedures.
- Ensure specimens are handled and processed according to documented Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Participate in regular competency assessments, quality control reviews, and audits as required.
- Pathologist Communication:
- Provide accurate reports and images to the supervising pathologist.
- Maintain communication for remote consultation, ensuring immediate access to the pathologist as needed.
- Specimen Processing and Safety:
- Ensure proper packaging, labeling, and secure transport of specimens and slides between clinics, laboratory, and pathologist.
- Implement best practices for lab safety, sample integrity, and risk management.
- Documentation and Training:
- Maintain detailed documentation of all procedures, quality control measures, and specimen tracking.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development as mandated by CLIA and CDPH guidelines.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) from a recognized organization, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in a related biological science field.
- At least one year of experience in gross examination of specimens in a high-complexity laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of CLIA regulations, California laboratory regulations, and best practices in pathology.
Preferred:
- Previous experience working in a dermatology or histopathology laboratory.
- Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR).
Supervision and Work Conditions:
- General Supervision by a pathologist who will be available for remote consultation and periodic audits.
- Physical presence of the pathologist is not required for routine grossing procedures, provided the Pathology Assistant complies with all procedural and quality standards.
- Work will primarily be performed in a secure laboratory environment with occasional communication between multiple clinic sites.
