Job Overview:
The Digital Pathology Technician plays a crucial role in the preparation, scanning, and management of pathology slides and tissue samples for digital analysis. They work closely with pathologists, laboratory technicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate digital imaging and data management. The role requires proficiency with specialized software, imaging equipment, and quality control measures in a clinical or research setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Slide Preparation & Scanning:
Prepare tissue samples (e.g., biopsy, surgical) for scanning, ensuring proper staining, labeling, and handling.
Operate digital slide scanners to capture high-resolution images of tissue slides, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
Ensure that scanned images are properly archived and accessible for Pathologist review.
Data Management:
Manage the storage and organization of digital pathology images, ensuring that files are properly named, categorized, and stored in a secure, organized system.
Utilize Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) or Digital Pathology Software to track and document sample and image data.
Collaborate with the IT department to ensure the integrity, security, and accessibility of data.
Image Analysis & Quality Control:
Assist in the analysis of digital images by preparing slides and performing preliminary assessments using image analysis software.
Perform routine quality checks to ensure images meet specified criteria (e.g., resolution, color balance, etc.).
Troubleshoot issues with scanning devices and image quality, making necessary adjustments.
Collaboration with Pathologists and Other Medical Staff:
Provide support to pathologists and other medical staff by preparing images for review, facilitating telepathology consultations, and aiding in diagnoses.
Assist in the transfer of digital images and pathology reports to clinical or research teams.
Technical Support and Equipment Maintenance:
Provide ongoing technical support for digital pathology equipment and software, troubleshooting issues as they arise.
Maintain scanning equipment, ensuring it is calibrated and functioning correctly, and perform routine maintenance and software updates.
Compliance & Documentation:
Ensure compliance with laboratory safety standards, regulations (such as HIPAA), and quality assurance procedures.
Document all work processes, ensuring that proper records are maintained for audits and regulatory purposes.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Education:
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related field.
Certification or training in pathology technology or digital imaging is a plus (e.g., ASCP certification).
Skills and Experience:
Experience with digital pathology software (e.g., slide scanning and image management software).
Knowledge of laboratory operations, slide preparation, and tissue processing techniques.
Strong technical skills with imaging equipment and troubleshooting abilities.
Ability to work with pathologists and clinicians, providing clear communication and support.
Strong attention to detail and quality control skills.
Knowledge of relevant health regulations (HIPAA, CLIA) and laboratory safety standards.
Proactive and organized with a strong ability to manage digital data and imaging equipment.
Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and workflows in the rapidly evolving field of digital pathology.
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues independently.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to work with computers and digital imaging equipment for extended periods.
Some lifting or carrying of lab equipment and materials may be required.
Required onsite work at 8170 Rourk Street; Myrtle Beach, SC 29572 and shift may be one of: 10:00 am - 6:30 pm or 6:00 pm - 2:30 am.
