OverviewThe perioperative nurse is a non-sterile member of the surgical team. They are responsible for providing assistance to the surgical team and to the anesthesia provider using a good working knowledge of the procedure by anticipating the surgeon’s needs in performing the procedure. The perioperative nurse will also assist in the providers clinics to include consults, post-operative appointments, and other duties as assigned. Of note, all documentation completed by the LPN must be signed off by a team RN.

Responsibilities- Participates in ensuring correct patient, correct surgical site, and intervention.
- Participates in intraoperative nurse charting including time in and time out of surgery.
- Circulates, assembles and provides properly functioning equipment, devices and supplies to the surgical team, in addition to anticipating the needs of the surgical team throughout the procedure.
- Evaluation and implementation of standing orders/protocols as needed based on patients status
- Administration of conscious sedation medications and other IV medications as ordered with MD oversight.
- Assist with turning over and setting up procedure room, sterilizes surgical equipment and prepares for procedures as needed.
- Documentation of procedural process
- Dispenses appropriate oral and injectable medications as directed by physician and anesthesia.
- Provides work guidance, support and instruction to peers and other staff members.
- Monitors all clinical activities related to patient procedures.
- Monitors and oversees the flow of procedures and room turnover. Ensures procedure room is maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner.
- Communicates with the MD regarding flow of cases, add-on cases, delays, and/or cancellations.
- Performs all duties related to medical instrument cleaning and sterilization of equipment.
- Cleaning of the operating room.
- Checks work order for all equipment.
- Opening of sterile packs, instruments and supplies, assuring that a sterile environment is maintained throughout the procedure
- Maintains a safe environment for treating the surgical patient, including safeguards to protect the patient from cross infection.
- Checking and supplying operating room at the end of the scheduled cases.
- Assists in organizing supplies and equipment.
- Assists in inventory management.
- All other duties as assigned
QualificationsLPN or Registered Nurse degree from an accredited school of nursing is required
- State specific LPN or RN license required
- 1-2 years of recent experience in a medical office in a similar capacity preferred.
- Maintains BLS Certification.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Able to operate standard office equipment.
